A rare expedition to bike the length of Israel was accomplished by Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) and their “Israel on Two Wheels” Cycling Tour. Michelle Cohen, who is FIDF Midwest Region Senior Director of Programs and Operations, as well as a participant in the FIDF Cycling Tour, shared a bit about the motivation for this experience.
“The inspiration for the FIDF Cycling Tour of Israel came from the organizer’s combined passion for cycling and the love of Israel,” she said, referring to Dany Saar. “The tour offered participants the opportunity to have a unique adventure through FIDF and to experience Israel, learn its history, and meet the brave soldiers who protect not only Israeli citizens, but also Jews and citizens around the world.…
The concept for the FIDF Cycling Tour originated in the Midwest with FIDF supporter and Cycling Tour leader Dany Saar of West Bloomfield, Michigan, who has previously led bike trips in Israel and wanted to initiate this tour for Friends of IDF – combining his two passions and making the experience possible for other likeminded individuals.”
Throughout the tour, there were some very memorable moments such as riding alongside wounded IDF veterans while all working toward climbing Israel’s mountains. Participants also visited IDF bases on the Lebanon border, Mt. Hermon and the Israeli Air Force Base. They sat down for dinner one night with 15 former combat veterans, all recipients of the FIDF IMPACT! Scholarship, a gift of higher education given to former soldiers by donors who participated in the tour. Their once-in-a-lifetime trip was unforgettable.
“Descending to Israel’s southernmost city, Eilat, and the incredible feeling of accomplishment the group felt upon completing the tour, which spanned the length of Israel,” said Cohen of her fond memories. Not only were they triumphant in their journey, they also spread awareness about the scholarship program along the way, which most veterans were unaware was available to them.
