Stomping out cancer

It’s a golden opportunity to take out a killer, as HCA Healthcare’s JFK Medical Center, Palms West Hospital and West Palm Hospital join with the American Cancer Society as a Gold Sponsor in this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on October 18 at the Meyer Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, which kicks off at 9 a.m.

More than 6,000 participants will be pretty in pink as they don the color we’ve all come to recognize; each year a sea of pink helps bring our attention to the fight against breast cancer.

Walkers will include breast cancer patients and survivors, as well as family members and friends of those who have lost their fight against the disease, but live on in memories and marches.

“ACS has the longest history of supporting breast cancer research and has directly affected patient outcomes,” said Dr. Beth Ann Lesnikoski, breast surgeon and medical director of the Breast Institute at JFK Medical Center. “ACS researchers have proven the safety and effectiveness of mammography, which has been shown to have a huge impact on survival and early detection.”

HCA employs about 204,000 people; at this walk alone Dr. Lesnikoski said that 80 to 100 HCA Healthcare workers will walk to represent HCA. The sponsorship also includes a $15,000 donation towards the event.

HCA Healthcare is one of the nation’s first hospital companies and the nation’s leading provider of healthcare services. HCA facilities deliver 4 to 5 percent of all inpatient care in the US today. The company is comprised of approximately 165 hospitals and 115 freestanding surgery centers in 20 states and England.

Interested in participating? You don’t have to walk alone.

“Please consider joining our team and walking to support the cause,” Lesnikoski said. “If you can’t join us at the Making Strides walk, consider participating in the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery or Reach to Recovery programs. Both of these programs allow volunteers to support cancer patients during their journey to survivorship.”
