With Halloween just around the corner, parents with younger children need not worry or scramble to find a self-contained, fun and safe venue to celebrate one of their kids’ favorite holidays. For the 13th year running, children of all ages can enjoy Halloween festivities at Spookyville. The event takes place in historic Yesteryear Village at the South Florida Fairgrounds and will be spread out over the course of two weekends (Oct. 17-19 and Oct. 24-26) as well as on Halloween, a date that happily falls on Friday (Oct. 31). Hours are Fridays from 5-8 pm and Saturdays and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Traditional trick-or-treating can be safely enjoyed each night and every child receives a trick-or-treat bag as well as an arts and crafts takeaway bag upon entrance. There will be plenty of opportunity to work off the sugar rush, too. Old-fashioned games such as a witch’s hat toss and pumpkin toss (based on bean bag tosses), scavenger hunts, scarecrow making, mini golf, arts and crafts, a hay maze and carnival rides are just some of the highlights that will surely excite children (and adults) of all ages. Live entertainment is included too.
If that’s not enough, costume contests take place on Sundays and the second annual Pet Costume Contest (no exotic pets, reptiles, snakes or spiders please) will be held on both Fridays, October 17 and 24. Prizes will be awarded. Animals must be leashed.
Nineteen historic houses from around Florida have been brought to the fairgrounds to create Spookyville. For those looking for a little scary fun, one is an infamously haunted house that has been featured on the TV shows Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures and is called “The Riddle House.”
Designed for children 12 and younger, Spookyville is a family (and pet) friendly event that is sure to delight kids of all ages. Admission is $8 (free for children 2 and younger) and all activities are included. Two for the price of one adult admission coupons are available throughout the community for October 17 and 24 entrance only. Food and beverages are available for purchase and parking is free.
