Patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and invasive surgery at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital will soon breathe a little easier with the benefit of therapeutic acupuncture, massage and yoga – provided by Angie’s Spa.
Angie’s Spa is a charitable cancer foundation that provides grants to hospitals so that their patients may enjoy free relaxation therapies. According to their website, spa services help alleviate painful side effects, provide relaxation and give cancer patients a self-esteem boost.
“More than 15,000 cancer patients and their caregivers have received free therapeutic services since Angie’s Spa was established in December 2008,” said Kathleen Conner, president of Angie’s Spa. “Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital is the latest cancer center to receive funding for the 2014-2015 grant year.”
Angie’s Spa was founded in honor of Angie Levy, who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 27, but plowed onward earning her MBA at Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. She worked for JPMorgan Chase as an analyst in New York all while fighting the disease. Unfortunately, Levy lost her battle in November 2007 at the age of 36.
Three friends from her undergrad years at Emory University wanted to honor her memory. They remembered comments that Levy made about how nice it was to get a massage or manicure while going through chemo. Thus, Angie’s Spa was born.
Angie’s Spa has awarded $126,500 in grants to six programs in cancer centers across the country with Boca Raton Regional its newest recipient.
