Running for charity…and bacon

I’ve recently realized that I may have this whole “swimsuit season” backwards. The intense exercising and diet, which usually starts before the beginning of summer, happens to jog my memory about the time that last season’s bathing suits go on clearance. Maybe it is my thrifty subconscious that does the work, or perhaps it is a convenient coincidence. Either way, my need for speed and a favorable metabolism usually starts around now.

Luckily for anyone else who is dusting off their running shoes, I’ve found some pretty intriguing events coming up around the South Florida area that just might help jumpstart your workout regimen.

  • September 27 (Stuart, FL) – Courage Challenge Mud Run & Obstacle Course Race: Conquer more than 25 obstacles spanning over six miles of land. You can race individually or with a team. If you think you have the best Lion/Lioness costume, you could win free entry into their next event. A portion of the proceeds go to help the Hibiscus Children’s Center and the FCA. Register at www.couragechallenge.com.
  • October 11 (Davie, FL) – The Great American Bacon Race: Join up with fellow bacon lovers to partake in this interesting 5K. While you run in Vista View Park, you will pass various “bacon stations” where you can chomp down on your favorite tasty treat as you look towards the finish line. The Bacon Bash after-party will provide you the music, prizes, food trucks and…bacon! Medals, T-shirts and a free beer are given to all participants (age appropriate, of course). Proceeds support anti-bullying charity, NVEEE. Find more information at www.americanbaconrace.com/miami-2014.
  • November 8 (West Palm Beach, FL) – Light the Night 5K Run: This second annual run will take place along the Intracoastal Waterway, starting at the Meyer Amphitheatre and conclude at Currie Park along Flagler Drive. The run will precede the annual Light the Night Walk event. This event helps support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Enjoy live music and entertainment before the race, complete with a children’s area and team photo section. For more information, visit www.lightthenight.org/pb.

Whether you’re looking for something to add to your racing repertoire, or have an extremely healthy way of being charitable, check out these fun races that are for a great cause!
