Circumnavigating the narrow pathways through display cases and tables showcasing shimmering baubles, bangles and beads, reminded guests that the evening’s host, Sequin Palm Beach, in the heart of Worth Avenue, was not a typical destination for the average Everglades adventurer, who would most likely prefer skipping and slapping an airboat through sawgrass and alligators. Patrons, staff and friends of the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation for The Everglades, celebrated their kickoff to the upcoming 2014-2015 season with delicate sandwich wraps and hearty greetings.
The Arthur R. Marshall Foundation’s recently appointed CEO, Mark Pafford, shared news of the foundation’s continuing goals and mission. He emphasized the critical work ahead, saying, “We must continue our outreach that provides educational opportunities in Palm Beach County, and we must create a culture of concern.”
Pafford, who also represents District 86 in the Florida House of Representatives, explained, “It is certainly a challenge, but we have a great opportunity to showcase the need to restore our river of grass.”
Sequin Palm Beach donated one $1,500 and two $500 gift certificates for three raffle drawings, and when Bonnie Lazar waved the winning ticket for the first drawing, murmurings of, “The fix was in,’’ playfully resonated among the crowd. Lazar is a member of the foundation’s board of directors and also chairs this year’s 10th annual River of Grass Gala. Lazar gallantly shook off the good-natured ribbing, clutched her winning ticket and announced the time of the next drawing.
Crystal Blauweiss of Sequin Palm Beach welcomed guests and assisted shoppers. She explained that Sequin owners, Kim and Linda Renk, are steadfast supporters of the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation and its mission to provide science-based education and outreach to enhance its goal of restoring and preserving The Everglades and its ecosystem. Nancy and John Marshall thanked patrons for their continued support before greeting friends after a sultry summer’s absence.
The 10th annual River of Grass Gala will be held aboard the Lady Windridge yacht in West Palm Beach, Saturday, December 6. Honorary Chairs are Thais & Matthew Piotrowski and Bernadette & Bob Shalhoub.
