A gamut of Grommets

When someone hands me a Christmas list, no matter what’s on it, I know they won’t get it.

Hey now, give me a chance to explain before any judgment is passed. It’s not that I’m being a Scrooge and wish they have an unpleasant Christmas, and it certainly isn’t that I want them to receive nothing that they request. I just have a slightly different approach to gift giving.

Whether it is an unconscious effort to be the one to always give an “outside the box” gift, or my fascination with new ideas and Kickstarter companies, I always try to choose something that I think they will like. Of course, this allows room for disappointment, but anyone who knows me, knows I’m going to look for something quirky and fun, but still relevant.

When I stumbled upon the website The Grommet, I was in perpetual holiday gift-giving heaven. Their mission statement: “We launch undiscovered products and help them succeed; we call them Grommets. Grommets aren’t just things. Grommets are products with a purpose invented by people with stories. Buy differently.” This perfectly encapsulates the items on their website and the reasons why they are featured.

Each product includes the normal items you would expect to find in an online store: price, dimensions, description, etc. However, what you don’t find on other sites is a brief biography on the maker of the items, followed by a video showcasing the designer’s products and a little of their personality.

The Grommet seeks out new products that have meaning. From totes made from completely recycled material, to infinity scarfs, to even mushroom-growing kits, they have it all. Not only can you search for products by traditional categories as “for him” or “for her,” but also search for products that are all-natural, handcrafted and crowd-funded.

If you sign up for their email list, you have the option to choose products specifically tailored to your taste. There’s free shipping on orders over $25 and you will occasionally receive promotional emails that allow you to save money on your purchases. Whether you are searching for gift with a purpose, or are a potential Grommet with an undiscovered enterprise, start here.
